Default .3ds export problems

I'm trying to recover a model I created with 3DS Max and I'm having trouble with AC3D exporting a proper .3ds file.

I have a previous version of my model broken down into .obj files. I import those files into AC3D and then export to a .3ds file and then inport that into 3DS Max. All of the parts of the model export into .3ds from AC3D except one. It compiles fine, but when I try to import it into 3DS Max, Max tells me it's not the correct format.

Any suggestions?

Try optimising vertices and surfaces first. If that fails, send the offending file to me.

With 3ds there are several issues.
There can't be more than 64,000 polys and/or points or you'll get an error message.
The textures can't be more than 8 letters or numbers long.
black01A.jpg >> this would be ok
black002A.jpg >> this would not
Material names cannot be more than 8 letters or numbers long.
Try exporting from max to the common dae collada format as an alternative.
Although for some reason when I use collada my material names all get changed and I often lose mappings.
