There is a subdivide tool under the surface menu, too.

Well it has Divide, not a true subdivide.

Unfortunately, these plugins require polygon count to work, and I don't think 3D printing works with bump maps.

High poly counts are a fact of life with 3d printers since they don't do any smooth shading, either.

I've been playing with different tiling looking for a way to generate textured surfaces, e.g., hammer marks. The semi-randomness has been eluding me so far, but I've generated a nice diamond grip pattern as well as egg-carton shapes.

Well you can always do it the hard way, but yeah, I'd like a plugin that could apply baked in texture to an existing surface as well.

The noise option was... "less than optimal" in actual practice.

I've done more than a few plug-ins for 2D graphics programs, but only a couple of 3D programs. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the way more complicated maths involved.

The tilings I've been doing have been to try and find some geometry that will make a decent hammered look, or ray skin (rough, pebbly leather).

http://math.lbl.gov/voro++/about.html has some cool looking geometry. Probably not printable as is, but interesting.
