Plug-in Request for step and iges formats

Importing solid models into AC3D requires using FreeCAD.
Files must be saved in step or iges within the solid modeller, i.e. Solid Edge or SolidWorks.
Then they are imported into FreeCAD so that they can be exported into something AC3D can import, i.e. STL fomat.
It's time consuming and introduces errors in the file. Removing unnecessary surfaces and cleaning up the result is also a must.
Ideally we should have an AC3D plug-in to import iges or step file formats - eliminating the use of third party software.
I'd appreciate any thoughts.
