I just started using AC3D this week and everything is going nicely, but I’m having issues uploading into SL. All that I end up seeing are distorted images or colors. I like AC3D, but uploading into SL is cumbersome.

The preview image of a sculpted prim in the standard SL viewer is not always accurate. If you want to save linden dollars, use the preview grid, you can upload and test your sculpties for free there.

I tried to do something simple and made the first picture in AC3D. As you can see with the second picture, it still does not work out in SL.

It looks like you got the standard sculptie apple there, did you apply the sculpt map? You may want to read this tutorial carefully first : http://www.inivis.com/secondlifesculpted.html

Does anyone have a recommendation for a better program than AC3D when it comes to uploading into SL?

You are almost there. Select 'Sculpted' for the Building Block type and then drag your image (that you just uploaded) from your inventory (it will appear in Textures) on to the image area underneath the Building Block dropdown.
