need cross sectional drawings with dimensions
I'm a noob, so be gentle.
I'm trying AC3D because I wanted a simple 3D CAD tool like SolidWorks only easier and cheaper. I need the kind of drawings I can hand to a machinist to get something built. So I need cross sections with dimensions, like <----------------------- 1.5 ----------------------------> Like you can in most CAD tools. Right now the only thing I can do is pencil the dimensions onto the drawing after I print it out. And I can't do cross sections without slicing off large parts of the drawing. I can't find anything in the manual or prior posts? Is there a way? Thanx. |

Re: need cross sectional drawings with dimensions
ac3d isn't a CAD kind of tool. It is more like something you would use when you want to create an artist view of something. If you go looking on the web, you should be able to find some CAD software. AutoCAD is one, but it is rather expensive, but there are also some, with less capability that AutoCAD (but still more than enough for your needs) that are fairly reasonable. I bought a program called QuickCAD (which has more features than I have ever used) for about $80, but that was several years ago, and I don't think that it is still available.

It's probably not ideal but you can add text (Tools menu). You can also show object names (Tools->object-property-editor) and change the object names to the text you want to show.

Re: need cross sectional drawings with dimensions
All the tools I've looked at so far (AutoCad, SolidWorks, SolidEdge) are too complicated and way too expensive for the simple stuff I do. I understand AC3D wasn't originally intended for CAD. But the only thing it lacks for CAD is dimensioning. I hope they add it some day. It would make a nice competitor to the big 3.
Maybe someday. Thanks, Apchar. |

I'd like to second the motion for the ability to add dimensioning. Extra points for actual "dynamic" dimensioning that can have the text be 'attached' to the end markers, and as they are moved the dimension text updates, and/or vice/versa.

Visio is one that let you draw it first then put the dimension in later, but might be a bit dear.
